VBMA SPEAKER TOPIC INFORMATION
Diana Hermann, MAcOM, Dipl. O.M. (NCCAOM)®, L.Ac. will lecture on the use and integration of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Dermatology in Western Practices.
Chinese Herbal Medicine is the most comprehensive and well-organized system of herbal knowledge compiled in human history. This herbal medicine is part of a broader system of medicine referred to as Chinese Medicine (CM) or Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM encompasses herbal medicine, acupuncture, bodywork and nutritional therapies as forms of treatment. TCM has developed over thousands of years.
Dermatology (for humans) has been recognized as a distinct professional specialty within TCM since approximately the third century BCE. It utilizes herbal medicine for the most part. Dermatology can be quite complex, and Chinese Medicine Dermatology (CMD) requires additional
specialized training for practitioners.
It wasn’t until the 20th century that TCM became more popular for treating companion animals. More and more veterinarians in the west have been incorporating TCM in their veterinary practices or converting to holistic practices altogether. Chronic inflammatory skin conditions can be stubborn and complicated to address satisfactorily with western pharmaceutical medications alone. Chinese Medicine Dermatology can be an invaluable tool for veterinarians, and integrating Chinese Medicine Dermatology with conventional dermatology treatments can achieve
remarkable clinical results.
