Equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM) is an important neurologic disease of horses.  Its conventional diagnosis, treatment and presentation have remained a big challenge to veterinary clinicians, parasitologists and researchers since it was initially noticed in 1968. This presentation will first overview these challenges and a unique role that immune system plays for this disease. Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) theory views this disease pattern as a Zheng Qi Deficiency with Qi and Blood Stagnation. The treatment strategies and protocols of herbal medicine and acupuncture will be discussed in detail. Case studies on how to integrate TCVM and western medical medicine for diagnosis, treatment, prognosis and prevention will also be presented.

ABOUT DR. XIE:

Dr. Huisheng Xie received his Bachelor Degree of Veterinary Medicine at the Sichuan College of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine in Sichuan, China in 1983, and Master Degree from Beijing Agricultural University in 1988, and Ph.D. from the UF. In 1998, Dr. Xie founded the Chi Institute in Reddick, Florida to train veterinarians in Chinese acupuncture, herbal medicine, Food Therapy and Tui-na. Dr. Xie’s academic accomplishments in China include Achievement Awards from the Ministry of Agriculture, the National Science and Technology Committee and the Beijing Agricultural University. He has been invited to give lectures on veterinary acupuncture and herbal medicine all over the world. He is also the author of over 30 books and over 100 peer-reviewed papers. His textbooks, including Xie’s Veterinary Herbology, Xie’s Veterinary Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine-Fundamental Principles, have been used for TCVM training programs in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, South America, Canada and the United States. Dr. Xie has trained nearly 10,000 veterinarians from 80 countries to practice the TCVM worldwide.

Dr. Xie (pronounced “shay”) received his DVM from the China Southwest University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1983, after which he received his MS in Veterinary Acupuncture from China Agricultural University (CAU) in 1988. He was an assistant and associate professor at CAU College of Veterinary Medicine before he left China in 1994 to pursue his doctoral studies in America. He received his PhD from the University of Florida for his investigation of the mechanisms of pain control in horses using acupuncture in 1999. He is an associate professor of the Integrative Medicine Service in the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Florida.

In 1998, Dr. Xie founded the Chi Institute, where he continues to teach and develop educational programs. Dr. Xie’s academic accomplishments are extensive. He has received achievement awards from several major Chinese institutions, including the Ministry of Agriculture, the National Science and Technology Committee, and the China Agricultural University. He has lectured on veterinary acupuncture and herbal medicine around the world, and has been invited to speak in the United States, Japan, Thailand, South Korea, Australia, Mexico, Brazil, Europe and South Africa. He has authored over 20 books and over 100 peer-reviewed articles. His textbooks, which include Xie’s Veterinary Acupuncture, Xie’s Veterinary Chinese Herbology, and Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine: Fundamental Principles, have been used for TCVM training programs in Europe, South America, Australia, Africa, the United States, China and other Asian countries.
